UV Safety Month Sun Protection Tips

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, an excellent reminder to be proactive about sun protection — particularly when it comes to dangerous UV rays.

It’s important to wear or use a broad spectrum sunscreen every day to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, but even more so during the hot Chicago summers.

Are you applying sunscreen correctly?

With the heatwave coming through the city, a lot of us are spending more time at the beach. But make sure you are taking steps to protect your skin.

Choose a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Check the expiration date! Most sunscreen is good for 2-3 years. Reapply every 2 hours at least. Use a water-resistant sunscreen when swimming or sweating.

Think beyond the sunscreen

Often times people only think about sun protection when at the beach or the pool. But sun exposure adds up day after day, and it happens every time you are in the sun whether you are going for a run, spending a day at the zoo or even enjoying lunch on a patio. There are some simple steps you can take to limit your exposure to UV rays such as staying in the shade (especially during peak sun hours), wearing protective clothing, hats and sunglasses, and — of course — wear sunscreen.
